Overview

An attractive small tree, similar to Prunus serrula with peeling reddish-brown bark.

Description
A species of cherry, native to Nepal and Burma and was introduced to Kew about 1897. This is a small ornamental tree that is round-headed with glossy, peeling reddish-brown and amber bark and similar to Prunus serrula. The plain pink flowers are small, solitary or paired, that hang down in late spring. These are then followed by dark red, oval fruits.

Planting Position
Prunus rufa will tolerate most soils, including chalk and clay as long it is well-drained soil. To achieve the best flower display and autumn colour, plant in full sun.

Attributes
Prunus rufa is quite different in appearance from other flowering cherries. It is primarily grown for its interesting peeling bark.
