Species Description Hazel (Corylus avellana) Produces delicious hazelnuts in autumn; also one of the earliest sources of pollen for bees. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) Clusters of fragrant white flowers followed by deep purple berries are ideal for jams and cordials. Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) Spring blossoms and dark fruits (sloes) are perfect for making sloe gin. Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) White-pink blossoms and small fruits are perfect for jellies and attracting wildlife. Dog Rose (Rosa canina) Beautiful pink flowers followed by vitamin-rich rosehips that make excellent syrups. Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) Clusters of white flowers and bright red berries that attract birds and can be cooked into preserves.
