Description
There are several Copper beech cultivars available offering a range of foliar colouring. The Black Swan is perhaps the darkest. This ornate, deciduous tree develops a narrow crown with cascading or weeping branches. The leaves emerge a copper colour in the spring and darken to purple and almost black throughout the summer. Reaching maturity in 20 years this tree is unlikely to exceed a height of 15m, with a 4m spread, making it considerably smaller than its species.
Planting Position
In order to maximise the dark foliage effect Black Swan is best planted in full sun or partial shade. As with most beech they will grow in most soils, as long as they are not waterlogged and will tolerate most sites except coastal.
Attributes
Beech offer a wide variety of benefits however this specimen is chosen predominantly for its high aesthetic value and unusual foliar colouring.
