Dogwood is a medium to large deciduous shrub, growing 2-6 metres tall, with dark greenish-brown branches. Twigs growing in the sun are coloured crimson, while those in the shade are lime green. New shoots are bright red in winter.

Description
Cornus sanguinea is a native broadleaf deciduous shrub typically found in hedges and on the outskirts of woodland in southern England. It has small white flowers followed by black berries, but is mainly grown for the bright colour of its winter stems.
Planting Position
Suitable for most locations and soil types, it is best grown in moist but well drained soil, in full sun or part shade.

Foliage and Flowers
The leaves are opposite, 4-8cm long and 2-4 cm broad with an ovate to oblong shape and an entire margin; they are green above, slightly paler below and rough with a short stiff pubescence. The hermaphrodite flowers are small, 5-10 mm in diameter, with four creamy white petals, produced in clusters 3-5 cm across, and are insect pollinated. The fruit is a globose black berry 5-8mm, containing a single seed, they are often called “dogberries”.
Plant Interest
Common Dogwood is attractive to wildlife, with the flowers providing nectar for bees, the leaves attracting various species of moth and the berries attracting birds and other mammals.
Landscape Use
Most commonly in hedges and woodland, and can be used as an ornamental shrub, to provide a splash of colour in the winter.
