Description
Herman has become a popular cultivar as it is self fertile and produces its fruit a little earlier than other varieties. This particular Garden plum bears the trademark, fragrant white flowers that develop into blue-black fruit around July. The leaves are simple and ovate. It can be expected to reach 3m in height, with a similar spread, in 5-10 years.
Planting Position
An excellent choice for any sized garden providing an abundance of fruit from as early as July in favourable conditions. Herman requires full sun however can cope with exposure and a setting of any aspect. It prefers an alkaline or neutral soil pH although grows well in all but clay soils.
Attributes
This cultivar has all of the aesthetic and wildlife benefits of any plum tree however its stunning blue-black coloured fruit make for an eye-catching display from July onwards. The fruit can be eaten from the tree or used for cooking. It is a self fertile specimen and as such does not require a pollination partner however, fruit production can be bolstered if a compatible partner is planted close by. This tree belongs to flowering group 2.
