Description
Hornbeam 'Fastigiata' is a medium-sized, deciduous, broadleaf ornamental tree. Its narrow crown becomes compact and ovoid with age making it a wonderful specimen tree - perfect for screening or avenue planting.

The leaves turn a stunning orange and gold colour in the autumn and can be retained on the tree well into winter. The tree bears catkins throughout the year producing hop-like fruit clusters later in the season. Unlike its parent tree this variety will only achieve a mature height of between 10-15m..

Planting Position
Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata' tolerates partial shade or full sun and can cope with exposed sites however, it is susceptible to branch failure and as such locations with a strong prevailing wind should be avoided.

The Upright hornbeam copes with most soil types and soil pH but like most trees prefers moist and well-drained soil.

Attributes
Like native hornbeam, the ribbed leaves are serrated, brightly green in spring and changing to yellow in autumn. Its catkins appear up to 8cm in length. This is a stunning and rather different tree that provides excellent habitat for birds and mammals given its dense crown formation. Planted in the right setting it will provide all year-round interest via its unusual and uniform branch formation, and attractive foliage.
