Description
The genus Griselinia consists of evergreen trees and shrubs native to New Zealand, Brazil and Chile. This particular species is a popular hedge specimen able to cope in our colder climate although it can succumb to severe frosts and temperatures under -5 degrees C in exposed locations.
Planting Position
The New Zealand broadleaf copes well in coastal locations as it is salt tolerant and it grows well in full sun on exposed or sheltered sites. It can however, succumb to low temperatures, particularly if exposed. It can be planted in any soil type or pH.
Recommended Planting Density
3L Pot : 5-6 plants per metre
5L Pot : 3-4 plants per metre
7.5L Pot : 2-3 plants per metre
Size
Growth Rate: Fast
Final Height: 8m (maximum - easy to maintain at 3-4m)
Final Spread: 5m
Foliage and flowers
The broad, glossy oval leaves are a vibrant light green. The small, yellow flowers are somewhat inconspicuous and develop into purple fruits on female plants where both sexes are established together.
Plant Interest
The dense, bushy form provides safe habitat for birds who also enjoy its fruit as a food source. This dense, evergreen makes an excellent hedge and screen and is commonly used in coastal locations due to its salt tolerance. Griselinia makes an effective hedge and screen and is particularly attractive in formal planting schemes.
