Description
Nordmann, or Caucasian Fir is a large conifer with a broad, pyramidal crown with horizontal branches spaced at fairly even intervals. A classic Christmas tree often used in this country due to its abolity to retainneedles, even when cut. If left to grow, this evergreen, ornamental tree will grow up to 25-30m in height with a breadth of 7-8m. They can live as long as 500 years.
Planting Position
Abies nordmanniana likes a sheltered, sunny spot and is generally happiest planted in moist, well-drained slightly neutrel to acidic soils.
Foliage & Flowers
Young specimens grow slowly, but as the tree ages, growth quickens somewhat. The young branches are olive green and the small buds do not have any sap. In the winter, the buds turn reddish brown. The shiny, dark green needles have 2 white stripes underneath.
Plant Interest
Best grown as a specimen with plenty of space around or planted up for Christmas trees.
