Overview
'Red Majestic' Hazel is the unusual purple-leaved form of the contorted twisted corkscrew hazel.
Description
Red Majestic is a fine combination of the intricately twisted Corkscrew Hazel but with the added attraction of beautiful dark purple leaves in spring that become green with a purple flush as the season progresses. As autumn approaches the leaves turn burgandy before finally falling off. In late winter the unusual branches are covered with purple-red catkins. This compact, semi-weeping tree provides a long season of visual interest.
Planting Position
Plant Red Majestic in full sun or partial shade with a south, east or west-facing aspect. For the best purple leaves, choose a sunny area. It will thrive in any well-drained soil that has an alkaline to neutral pH.
Attributes
This tree is an excellent choice for a small city garden as it is highly tolerant of urban pollution, or even in a container in a courtyard or patio. Being very deer-resistant they are also a perfect choice for a country garden or a mixed hedge or meadow garden.
