Overview
A small and ornamental weeping tree, bearing clusters of pea-like lavender coloured flowers in the spring before the leaves emerge.
Description
The genus Cercis produces a variety of deciduous shrubs and small trees. They typically have clusters of pea-like flowers that develop before the leaves and give way to flattened, dark purple seed pods. The flowers of this particular variety are lavender in colour. The green, heart shaped leaves emerge after flowering and turn yellow in the autumn. The tree itself has a weeping habit and can be expected to achieve a maximum height of 1.5-2.5m, with a 1.5m spread, in 10-20 years.
Planting Position
This particular Redbud can be planted in a sheltered or exposed location and given its very limited size would make an ideal choice for a small garden. Locations with a north aspect should however be avoided. It grows well on soils of any type or pH.
Attributes
This small tree makes a stunning addition to any garden with its delicate profusion of flowers and heart shaped leaves. It also offers autumnal interest via its purple, pod like seeds and yellow leaf colouring.
